God's Shit (for reals)
02:17
|
|||
Has your soul ever been so light
that it billows in the air like smoke
and it moves just as slow as a sweet lover's kiss
so that time takes its time for it?
I've some friends who still are kids
i've some friends who grew too quick
and some wander searchin for something like me
turnin stones to find god's shit
when I give up the fight at last
when the pain in my joints does sing
will you churn up my soul with the dirt you do bring
so that loves that never thrived can spring?
when I was young the world was light
but now its startin to soak and sag
all the rooms that did echo are cluttered with noise
what a clamor for a former void

You are a Beautiful Mess
03:32
|
|||
when you've rounded up
all your lost dogs, I'll be waiting for you
when you've plucked all the petals from my head
I'll be waiting for you
I have seen your face as I've dreamed at night
I still dream now
Some mirage does make me feel full of straw
I saw you smile
don't beat round the bush
your kiss makes me rush
I'll be waiting for you
I was made of stone
I saw cloudless clear
have you made up your mind?
don't beat round the bush
your kiss makes me rush
I'll be waiting for you
when the dust does clear
will I see your face?
my dear, I'm waiting for you

Little Doe
03:16
|
|||
Will this hint of love stay true to its promise
or like a beautiful comet pass by?
I felt as though on that crazy evening
that I could barely believe at all
O Little doe don't run
my chase for you is as old as the memory
of the time that you told me your name
but sometimes it all seems like a message we carve
in the sands of our hearts as the wind blows
O little doe don't run
if you could would you switch
to a world where love made sense
we'd let our bodies overlap
no hearts would touch but none would wrench
no, I'd rather be in this silly world
where we endlessly chase our tails
I'd rather face the heartless sea with just this
sad and ragged sail

Summer
04:00
|
|||
i ran out of all the money I'd saved for summer
i gambled it all away in the spring
now im as broke as a bird with no wing
what should I do?
I ran out of my music I made for summer
I sang out all my lungs in the spring
now I am running low on notes to sing
what should I do?
what should I do different
what would you do in my stead
what should I do?
little baby yet unborn I'll be your uncle
I'll show you all the games to play with life
then you will know the dark from the light
that's what I'll do
that's what I'll do to mend
that's what I need to mend
that's what I need
I ran out of my heart in time for summer
I gave it all away in the spring
but here it has grown back enough to let me sing

The Other Side of Life
02:38
|
|||
I said "I knew it from the start,
we'd best carve another Ark
and then leave this crumblin bastard to himself
we can build it all anew
both the good earth and sky blue"
and I said I'd meet you on the other side of life
then you told me which way
the wind was blowin true
so that I could set my sail before night grew
and I gathered up my cause
cloven hoof and dirty paw
and said I'd meet you on the other side of life
it was 40 days of rain
we were battered wet and raw
my only friends were all those coupled animals
and they hardly said a word
cept one garrulous gull bird
who said he was waiting to see the other side of life
and we finally did hit
a sandy little beach
where the air was soft and smooth and crisp and sweet
and I drew it in my lungs
but in my mind missed everyone
and that's my story of the other side of life

Yellow Sky
02:10
|
|||
that angry yellow sky
made me wonder why oh why
what had I done so bad to piss him off
it was clear I'd made him cross
but what ritual now lost
could repair the lost love of dirt and air
I said "I hope that when I die,
my soul goes back to the sky"
thinking that this little prayer'd win em back
I said "I'd rather be a dove,
with the wind for my one love"
yes, I hoped these little words would do the trick
It seemed this flattery hit home
clouds parted and sun shone
where wooden bones were there sprouted little buds
Now, I cannot tell a lie
I was taken by surprise
felt something change when that light
hit my heart
I said "I hope that when I die,
my soul goes back to the sky"
but then I felt these very words strike a chord
I said "I'd rather be a dove,
with the wind for my one love"
but then I felt a yearning I'd never known
I said "I hope that when I die,
my soul goes back to the sky"
and I mean it as I say it here for you

Which End is Up
03:25
|
|||
in the dark i spilled
all my ramblin random thoughts
while you listened on wondering:
could we just trade spots
my window for your aisle
but I'll bet my view won't make you smile
cause you don't know which end is up
then you asked me what
i thought love was
first i laughed, then I shrugged, then began
if you need to be
on the run again
don't just up and go, my friend
cause you don't know which end is up
it may be too late
to turn back
and find out just what mistake
led you here
a better thought:
what to do now
if you admit to yourself
the truth

Down by the Hollow
04:57
|
|||
Will you follow down to the hollow
down to the withered tree?
though the tree's changed though the light's strange
still its a sight to see
we would all go down searchin the soft ground
dreaming of rubies and gold
down by the hollow that place time swallowed
we sing so we don't grow old
a year has gone by since I lost my
sense of space and time
alone in silence, alone my mind bent
towards a lonely light
like a moth stuck circling some lamp posing
a pale stand in for sun
a year has gone by since i lost my sense or since i've run
down by the creek by the hollow
from time to time i'll say hello
just passing thru to see
if time's been kind to you
sometimes its best to look back and think to
the things that have come to pass
if the future is open to both hearts whole and broken
then the dream of love will last
a chapter is closing the song's transposing
your life's in a better-sung key
and sometimes its best to look off and think to
how ill be led thee
down by the creek by the hollow
from time to time i'll say hello
just passin thru to see
if time's been kind to you
i'm sick of your city of smoke
i'm sick of your mountain of No
and the future is fertile like the banks of a creek
so dig for the gems you did seek
down by the creek by the hollow
still we all seek gold though we've grown
life is a brief kiss out in the cold
